The room thermostat governs the whole house
One thermostat, usually in a hallway, decides when the boiler runs for every room in the building. That is the single biggest weakness in a conventional heating setup, and it explains a lot of complaints that get blamed on the appliance.
If the thermostat sits somewhere that warms quickly, it satisfies early and shuts the system down while the far bedroom is still cold. If it sits in a draught, near a door or above a radiator, it reads a temperature nobody is experiencing. Position is not a detail; it is the calibration of the entire system.
The setpoint deserves the same scrutiny. Turning a thermostat up does not make the house warm faster, because the boiler is already running flat out until the setpoint is reached. It only makes the house warmer at the end, and hotter for longer than anybody wanted.

They are widely misunderstood as taps. The numbers are temperatures, not flow rates, so turning one to maximum does not heat the room faster; it simply lets the radiator run until the room is hotter than you want. Set them for how the room is used and leave them alone.
There is one exception worth knowing: the room containing the main thermostat should generally not have a thermostatic valve fighting it, or the two controls end up arguing about the same air.
Valves also seize over a still summer. Working each head fully open and closed a few times before the heating season starts is a two-minute job that prevents a radiator being permanently cold in November.
Programmers, zoning and what actually saves money
Heating a house nobody is in is where most waste happens, and a programmer set to a routine that stopped applying three years ago is the usual reason. It is worth setting the schedule around the week you actually have, including the days somebody is home.
Zoning takes the idea further by letting upstairs and downstairs run on separate schedules and separate temperatures. In a household that uses the two halves of the house at different times, it is one of the few upgrades that changes both comfort and cost rather than trading one for the other.
Smart controls are worth having when the household will genuinely use them: remote adjustment matters most for irregular hours and for properties that stand empty between visits. In a home with a settled weekly routine, a well-set conventional programmer does most of the same work.

Balancing: the free improvement almost nobody does
Water takes the easiest path. Left alone, most of the flow goes through the radiators nearest the boiler, which get hot quickly while the far ones lag. Balancing corrects that by restricting the easy circuits slightly so every radiator takes its share.
It is measured work rather than guesswork, done at the lockshield end of each radiator, and it costs nothing but time. It also very often fixes the cold-far-room complaint that people were about to spend money on a bigger radiator to solve.
Any system that has been drained, extended or had radiators changed needs rebalancing afterwards. Very few get it, which is why so many houses have one room that has never quite worked since the last piece of heating work.
Regular servicing is the natural moment to raise all of this, because it is also when circulation issues, sludge build-up or controls problems get spotted before they turn into a breakdown.
