Where sludge comes from

Heating water and steel radiators react. Slowly, invisibly, the inside surfaces corrode and shed magnetite, a fine black oxide that thickens the water, settles wherever flow is slow, and cements itself into the bottoms of radiators and the narrow passages of the boiler's heat exchanger.

Kettling, the boiler rumbling like a kettle, is scale and sludge insulating the heat exchanger. Repeated pump failures, radiators that need bleeding constantly, and grey or black water whenever a radiator is removed all tell the same story.

The bills tell it too: a sludged system moves heat badly, so the boiler runs longer to achieve less. Cleaning a badly contaminated system is one of the few jobs that pays part of its own invoice back through the meter.
